Nikolai Olanvich Semenov (born 16 March 1962) is a Gandoorese politician who served as the 12th Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Gandoor from 2018 until 2024 and as Leader of the New Democratic Party from 2016 until 2024. He was appointed to the position of Prime Minister on 12 October 2018 following his party's victory in the twentieth National Elections on 7 July 2018.
Biography
Semenov was born to Sergey (1925 - 2013) and Frida (1927 - 2007) Semenov on 16 March 1962 in New Yordin City. The oldest of three siblings, Semenov and his family moved to Osaka in 1975, when he was twelve years old. In Osaka, he would attend Chiba Masato Elite Secondary School, a secondary school that only permits students who pass a rigorous exam to enter, from 1977 to 1982.
After graduating, Semenov would attend the University of Osaka, considered one of the top five universities in Gandoor, from 1982 to 1987, where he would earn a master's in political science and diplomacy and a bachelor's in education. It was while attending university that Semenov would, in 1984, meet Yukiko Hayashiba, his future wife - whom he would marry in 1994.
Moving back to his hometown in 1989, after the two of them graduated, he would spend four years as an elementary school teacher until being elected to the city council of New Yordin City in 1993, where he would remain until 1998, when he would be elected Mayor of New Yordin City. That same year, Yukiko gave birth to their first child, a son, Nikon. Semenov would be Mayor until 2005, when he was defeated by Rebecca Jackson. In 2006, he was elected to represent the 2nd District of Southside in the House of Southside, where he would serve for three terms until 2012.
National Political Career
In 2012, Semenov was elected as a Member of the Forum representing the 2nd District of Southside, alongside Karen Mori and Jeremy Travers, both fellow members of the New Democratic Party. In addition to Mori and Travers, Semenov also served alongside Jessica Benton, a member of the Gandoor Communist Party. He would quickly rise through the ranks of the New Democratic Party and would be elected as the Leader of the New Democratic Party in 2016, following Kenshiro Watanabe's stepping down from the position.
As Leader of the New Democratic Party, Semenov was nominated as their candidate in the 2018 National Elections. The election, which occurred on 7 July 2018, gave the NDP 489 out of 1000 seats, beating the incumbent Gandoor Communist Party, who ended up with 482 seats. As a result of the NDP's victory, Semenov was formally appointed as Prime Minister once the new arrangement of the Forum took their seats on 12 October 2018.
Following the New Democratic Party's defeat in the 2024 National and Forum Elections and the appointment of Park Sang-Hee to the office of Prime Minister on 11 October 2024, Semenov announced that he would be resigning as Leader of the New Democratic Party on 15 October, with leadership elections for the party set to occur that same day. He was succeeded as party leader by Beth Saunders.
