Public holidays in Gandoor
The current system of public holidays in Gandoor was established in 1960, with the passage of the Public Holidays Law 1960, which replaced the previous holiday system used since the establishment of the Democratic Republic in 1904. There are ten named and recognized holidays in Gandoor, with an additional ten being generic Public Holidays.
Under the provisions of the current law, all governmental services are closed on all twenty holidays and all non-governmental employees (with the exception of those in essential services such as emergency services or public transport) are guaranteed a day off on Labour Day and the ten Public Holidays. This is in addition to the minimum of twenty-five annual paid vacation days required by law for all employees. If a Public Holiday occurs on a weekend date, then it is moved to the next non-holiday workday.
The Public Holidays Law 1960 is able to be amended by the Forum for the purposes of creating new holidays, moving the date that a holiday falls on, or renaming a holiday.
The first change to the current holiday system was in 1982, when the Forum passed an act moving the holiday of Nature Day, which was celebrated on 6 July, to 22 April and renamed it to Earth Day, officially recognizing the annual event first celebrated in 1970.
In 2022, a new holiday, Revolution Day, was created and replaced Remembrance Day, which had existed from 1960 until 2022. Unlike Remembrance Day, which commemorated the lives lost in the then-recent Gandoor Civil War, Revolution Day commemorates both the start of the Gandoor Revolution and all who have sacrificed their lives for Gandoor throughout its history.
